“Are your an Ergo Mama or a Bjorn Mama?” As the salesman told me, these were my only two real options. Of course, I could consider the less popular carriers, but did I really see myself as an “Alternative Mama??”
Nonsense. The non-Ergo and non-Bjorn options are fantastic, and I encourage all Mamas to explore them. You’ll also find that your preference may change as baby grows. The Moby is fantastic to keep your newborn snuggled in close during a cold winter, and the Ergo is great when your baby starts packing on the pounds. We have the Bjorn, Ergo and Obi X-Sling at home. Daddy loves wearing Amelia in the Bjorn, and I love how the Obi X-Sling fits in my purse.
Overall, you can’t really go wrong with any of these carriers (though I’d be very careful with the Balboa). They all offer good support, but none of them will make your 20 lb. baby feel like a feather. That said, I would definitely recommend buying an additional sling that fits in your purse. I absolutely love the Japanese Obi X-Sling; moms stop me in the street to find out where I bought it. This is one of those “must have” items and a great baby shower gift.
What do you think, Mama? Thoughts to share with the other new moms debating between the “traditional” and “alternative” carriers?
