Which high chair is right for you? Tell us in the comments what you think.
The process of buying a high chair actually inspired me to create this website. I was shocked by the wide range in price – from $50 to $500 – and helpful information was hard to find! Style is an important factor as this item becomes a new piece of furniture in your kitchen or dining room, and so I collected information here on a variety of styles. But what I underestimated was the amount of time my child would spend in her high chair! Now, she only sits it in for meal times, but a toddler’s stomach is quite small, so Amelia gets in her chair about 5 times a day – 3 meals and 2 snacks. And of course, babies aren’t the most efficient eaters, so mealtime often includes a lot of time exploring the textures and such. Or trying to convince your child that what you’re serving is really delicious.
With so much time spent in the high chair, it gets plenty dirty. So, personally, I think that’s the most important thing to consider when picking out a high chair (after safety) is how easy it is to clean. Now, if you have limited time to clean and you don’t care about stains, go with a fabric or pattern that hides the mess easily. Alternatively, if you pride yourself on having a mild case of OCD, go with the leatherette options in a solid color that are easy to sponge off.
We ended up with the Joovy Nook and I absolutely love it. It’s easy to clean and I love the one-handed tray removal. (We have the Evenflo Modern at Grandma’s house and the fact that I can’t insert/remove the tray while holding the baby drives me crazy.) It also folds very easily and compactly. I originally thought that that feature wouldn’t be useful since I didn’t plan to fold and unfold the chair 5 times a day! But it’s actually a great feature if you want to bring the chair with you to a family or friend’s house. Overall, I think it’s a great value product. A simple, modern look, like the fancy new chairs that the Jetsons used, but it doesn’t break the bank.
What do you think, Mama? Thoughts to share with the other new moms researching high chairs?
